Resonator ukuleleIn 2008 a chap called LeRoy began experimenting with building instruments on top of a plywood skeleton. Inspired by this I developed my first concert size resonator ukulele fitted with a Dave King hand spun cone. It had a real 1930's valve radio sound, totally unlike a National or any of those Chinese imports like Ashbury or Republic. It took me a while to learn how to play it but in the end, I got the hang of it. Now if you want a 'blues' sound, string one of these with a low G and you are away into the Delta. In May 2009 I met with the gifted and skilled cone maker Colin Oldham of DRC. His cones defy description and after further experimentation I fitted this particular instrument with his High Country cone and now have a ukulele I don't have to fight to control! I have a video of the High Country cone in use on YouTube. | ![]() |
